Message from the MD

We thank our customers, suppliers, and partners for the confidence they have reposed in us over the last 35 years. We have grown hand in hand with the growth of the construction steel industry in the South. Your support and confidence in us have been an integral part of our success and longevity.

Steel and concrete are a marriage made to last forever, given that steel and concrete share similar thermal coefficients. Steel provides concrete with the tensile strength and ductility that concrete lacks, and that’s why the quality of TMT is critical to the integrity of concrete structures.

I was present when the foundation stone for our first Arc Furnace was laid in Pondicherry in 1985. I was standing there at dawn on Sep 27, 1987 watching the first tap of liquid steel. Thereafter, for over 35 years, I have strived to learn and inculcate the best practices in the industry through constant innovation in order to maintain our leadership position. It is thanks to the pride we take in our work and the unshakable support of our employees and stakeholders that we have achieved an enviable niche in this sector.

Rajendran Sabanayagam

Starting with a modest capacity of 12,000 TPA in 1987, today we
have a production capacity of over 200,000 TPA. We have been
able to achieve this because of our investment in modern
technology, stress on human resource development, and a
single-minded commitment to Quality above all.

First Plant

in Pondicherry

Incorporated in 1985 to establish the first steel plant in Pondicherry to manufacture 12,000 TPA of steel ingots.

Commissioned

Electric Art Furnace

Commissioned a modern Electric Arc Furnace to supply high-quality steel ingots to Rolling Mills across South India.

Doubled Production

As demand for quality steel ingots grew, Sumangala Steel doubled its production capacity to 24,000 TPA.

Installed 6 Metre

Continuous Casting Machine

Foreseeing a demand for billets, a modern 6-meter Continuous Casting Machine, designed by Concast of Switzerland, was installed.

Largest Furnace

in Asia

Commissioned two of the, then, largest Induction Furnaces in Asia, each with a capacity of 12 tons and 6,000 KW increasing capacity to 1,20,000 TPA. Sumangala Steel cements its place in history by becoming one of the first companies to cast steel billets through the Induction Furnace route.

First Exporters

Sumangala Steel becomes the first Indian company to export Steel Billets via containers to South-East Asia and Africa.

TMT Bars

made from superior billets

Sumangala brand of high-quality TMT bars are launched by forward integrating and manufacturing TMT from its own superior billets.

Hot Charging

Rolling Mill

Commissioned a modern state-of-the-art continuous hot charging rolling mill in Pondicherry to manufacture Fe500 grade TMT bars.

Fe500D

TMT Bar Launch

Launched Fe500D grade TMT bar with superior ductility.

12,000 KW

Induction Furnace

Commissioned a modern 25/30 ton, 12,000 KW Induction Furnace in Pondicherry increasing the production capacity to 200,000 TPA.

Fe550 & Fe550D

Launched the Fe550 and Fe550D grades of TMT bars.
